When I launched The Natural Supermarket, I was filled with excitement, determination, and a clear vision. I wanted to create a one-stop shop for natural, toxin-free products that people could trust—something I desperately needed when searching for remedies for my eldest daughter’s eczema. I imagined customers loving the convenience, sharing their positive experiences, and my business growing quickly.
What I didn’t expect was just how challenging this journey would be. But while it’s been far from easy, it’s also been deeply rewarding in ways I couldn’t have anticipated.
The Wins That Light the Way
Let me start with the good stuff because there’s been plenty of it! November has been an incredible month for The Natural Supermarket. We’ve had the highest number of orders to date, and it’s so fulfilling to know people are choosing my store for their health and wellness needs.
I recently attended my first Christmas fair, and the response was heart warming. So many people stopped by, showing interest in my products and asking thoughtful questions. It reminded me why I started this business in the first place—to make it easier for families to find healthier alternatives.
I’ve also pushed myself out of my comfort zone by attending networking events. Initially, I was nervous, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made. Meeting other entrepreneurs who share similar struggles—like the loneliness of working solo or the challenges of growing a business—helped me realise I’m not alone. These connections are as inspiring as they are comforting.
And I can’t wait to launch some incredible new brands soon. These are products I truly believe in, and I know they’ll resonate with my customers. Each milestone, no matter how big or small, feels like a step forward, and that’s what keeps me going.
The Tough Lessons Learned Along the Way
That’s not to say it’s all been smooth sailing. There’s a lot about running a business that nobody warns you about.
One of the hardest moments came when I partnered with a well-known influencer. I carefully curated a beautiful and very expensive PR gift basket and was thrilled when their team confirmed they’d feature my store to over three million followers. But after receiving the basket, they went silent. No post, no tag—nothing. I sent numerous messages to chase this up and I was completely ignored. What’s worse, I later saw them using my products in their own content, and I genuinely couldn't believe it.
I was heartbroken. I’d invested so much time, effort, and money into that collaboration, hoping it would bring much-needed exposure to my store. Instead, it left me feeling invisible and questioning whether I was cut out for this. But it was also a turning point. I learned to focus on partnerships that align with my values and trust my instincts when making business decisions.
Another reality is the financial pressure. Every penny counts when you’re running a small business. I wear many hats—managing the website, sourcing products, creating content, and answering customer queries—all while being a mum to two. It’s exhausting, but it’s also a labour of love.
What I’ve Learned About Doubts and Determination
The self-doubt can be relentless. Some days, I question if I’m doing enough or if I made the right decision to leave a stable career. Before this, I worked as an accountant and loved those occasional days in the office. I didn’t go in often, but when I did, I enjoyed catching up with colleagues over lunch or sharing a quick laugh in the kitchen. Those moments of connection brought a sense of camaraderie that’s hard to replicate when you’re working for yourself.
Entrepreneurship can be lonely, but I’ve learned to reframe those quiet moments. Instead of seeing them as isolating, I now view them as opportunities to reflect, grow, and connect with my purpose. And stepping out to meet others at fairs and networking events has reminded me that many of us feel the same way—and we’re all figuring it out together.
Why I Keep Going
Despite the challenges, the rewards of this journey are worth every sleepless night and every hurdle. The kind messages from customers who love my products, the excitement of hitting new milestones, and the chance to help others live healthier lives—it’s all incredibly fulfilling.
I started The Natural Supermarket because I wanted to make life easier for families like mine. I know how overwhelming it is to spend hours researching safe, natural products, only to be let down by misleading labels or unnecessary additives. My mission is to save others that time and stress, offering them a store they can trust.
This November has shown me what’s possible with persistence and belief. The highest number of orders, meaningful connections with other small business owners, and the buzz of new products launching soon—these are the moments that make the hard days worth it.
To Anyone on a Similar Journey
If you’re thinking about starting a business or chasing a dream, know this: it’s not easy, but it’s absolutely worth it. The setbacks will test you, but the wins—no matter how small—will remind you why you started.
To my fellow entrepreneurs: you’re not alone. Behind every polished social media post or successful launch is someone working hard, doubting themselves, and pushing through challenges. Celebrate the little victories, be patient with yourself, and trust the process.
Because even on the hardest days, we’re making progress—and that’s what truly matters.
